Day One: Imperial Palace, East Garden, and a Bonus

My first full day in Japan started pretty early, Lena leaves for work around 8:30 am and in an effort to get my bearings and some breakfast I walked her to work in the morning. We stopped for breakfast at a French cafe, decided to meet up later for lunch and went our separate ways. My chosen destination was Marunouchi or, more specifically, Imperial Palace and the East Garden. To my surprise I managed to get to them, see everything I planned and get back without getting lost ones! I think this was the first for me. I compensated for it later.

At the Imperial Palace I played the good tourist and took the signature picture of the Nijubashi bridge:

And took a look at the locked main gate:

From there it was just a short walk to the East Garden. But on the way I ran accross a Fountain Garden. Since I love fountains I couldn't pass this spot without stopping. Japanese fountains were not created for the likes of me, though, they were designed for people who don't mind sitting in contemplation waiting for the water patterns to change. I've got no such patience and therefore caught only three iterations, taking breaks in between to look at the Kikyo-mon Gate across the street.

East Garden is probably very beautiful during the blooming of the flowers or at least in the leaf turning season. However, I managed to miss both of these.

Not what you imagined a Japanese Garden would look like? How about this, then:

After exposure to all this fresh air I was quite hungry and the sushi spot Lena's newly acquired friend took us to was quite welcome. Also, I finally had real Japanese sushi. In Japan. I can live on this stuff. Especially if I get to follow it up with a piece of nice chocolate cake. And they say perfection is unattainable.
